A conference that cares

Welcome by the Secretary General

Dear Delegates, Student Officers, MUN-Directors and Guests,

In the midst of the preparations for MUNA 2019, I want to press pause for a moment in order to welcome you to the 14th edition of MUNA. The past few months our staff has been working very hard and passionately on the organisation of the conference, not only during school hours but also in their free time. We are all extremely excited and cannot wait to meet everybody at MUNA. I would especially like to welcome back to our conference the Hammond School from Chester, UK and Calcutta International School from Calcutta, India.

This year’s theme is ‘Press Pause. Play.’. The idea behind this is that if we want to do things right, we sometimes have to first press pause and take time to evaluate a situation before pressing ahead. Nowadays people tend to think less about the consequences of their actions due to the speed at which the world around us is moving. This is certainly true of our rapidly developing digital environment. People are quick to leave a comment under someone’s Instagram picture, to distribute some likes on Facebook here and there, or to send a question to their class or teacher through WhatsApp. The world is constantly striving to move forward, but sometimes forgets to look back or enjoy the moment. We need to think twice about acting too impulsively or without thought for others. Therefore, this MUNA we want to encourage you to look up from your phone every once in a while, pause your Netflix series for a second and enjoy the people, the world, and all the beautiful moments happening around you. As you participate in your committees, look for the positive, consider your neighbour and think your actions through.

Proponents of the idea that we should take time to enjoy and respect the world around us are the founders of this year’s charity ‘Right to Play’. This international organisation organises activities twice a week for children in developing countries who do not have the resources to play. They provide all the materials and guidance, and help these children to press pause on all of their worries and simply play. This MUNA I ask you to be inspired by this organisation and to think your actions through in order to change this world for the better. And remember that even though you might think that you play just a small part in changing this world, a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

Yours sincerely,

Caitlin Bonte

Secretary General of MUNA 2019
